walls of sound (Copy)

illuminating spaces with sound

„The real evolution in musical space may be that space becomes a real-time artistic activity, where sound and space act together to create music.“ (B. Blesser)

„I believe that inner architectural spaces are the natural ecosystems most conducive to the life of sound. In enclosed spaces, especially those with a lot of reverberation, sound lives longer while reproducing itself by millions. The space becomes an instrument, and the music a means for the emitted and reflected sounds to meet and together create new and unique sound phenomena. Since 2023 I try to develop this idea in the project

walls of sound.“ (joan riera robusté

Project description

The Walls of Sound project begins in 2023 and aims to take musical composition outside of concert halls. Our goal is to occupy emblematic architectural spaces with an important cultural, historical or emotional relationship with a specific community, so that they can be rediscovered through a sound intervention created specifically for each particular space.

The sound interventions proposed in Walls of Sound seek to incorporate the sounds created by architectural spaces into musical composition. More precisely, and thanks to specific techniques of fragmentation and spatialisation, it aims to use spaces with high levels of reverberation, such as churches or chapels, to achieve the realisation of the so-called „diffuse sound fields“. Experiencing diffuse sound fields means perceiving a sound that reaches us from all directions equally. This acoustic experience evokes the unlimited, the infinite, and favours the experience of plenitude: our whole being merges into a single sensation in which the distinction between time and space, the one and the whole, disappears.

Walls of Sound invites the contemplation of a sound event that is created by the architectural space at the very moment it is heard.
